Headaches

Persistent headaches are often linked to poorly functioning joints in the neck. Our physiotherapists assess what's driving your headaches and treat the underlying cause — restoring movement and easing nerve irritation, in the comfort of your own home.

Headache is one of the most common complaints in Australia, with around 15 per cent of us reaching for painkillers for a headache at any given time. Because headaches are so common, it's easy to assume they're just a normal part of life — but a persistent headache is a sign that something isn't working properly.

Relying on medication to get through a headache is a bit like removing the warning light from your car's dashboard: it doesn't solve the underlying problem, it just dulls the pain for a while.

Types of headache we treat

Cervicogenic headaches (starting in the neck) and migraines are the most common types we see, with cluster headaches being the rarest. We also treat sinus, rebound and exertion headaches.

What causes headaches?

Headaches can be triggered by a range of factors — stress, poor posture, accidents, medications, environmental triggers such as strong odours and pollution, and dietary irregularities. One of the most overlooked causes of migraine and tension headache is irritation of the nerves in the upper neck, caused by poorly functioning spinal joints. Because these nerves supply the scalp and face, irritation here can refer pain into a headache.

Assessment

Your physiotherapist carries out a detailed history along with an orthopaedic, neurological and spinal examination to identify what's triggering your headaches. Further diagnostic testing such as X-ray or MRI may be recommended before your treatment plan begins.

Treatment approach

Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for many types of headache. By carefully restoring proper movement to the joints of the neck, your physiotherapist can reduce nerve irritation and muscle tension — addressing the cause of your headaches, not just the symptoms.

Evenings and weekends, no problem

Either before or after your consultation, whichever is easier for you.

Can I use my private health fund card and just pay the gap?

No — private health rebates need to be claimed online after your invoice is paid. We don't have a health-fund terminal for on-the-spot gap payments.
